Greyson Nekrutman is a teen drumming phenom who has so much passion and energy, he’s impossible to ignore. He admires the great drumming legends and he’s covered a ton of classic jazz and big band tunes over the past few years.
“That’s cool and all, but can you play ‘Caravan’?”
The movie Whiplash came out in 2014, and it reminded the rest of the world how awesome drumming is. It featured the song “Caravan” (Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington), which became a recurring piece for the protagonist.
Of course, whenever a song enters pop culture, people start requesting that song. And as a drummer – especially as a jazz drummer – you bet Greyson has been asked to play it. It’s like asking a metal guitarist to shred the solo from Dragonforce’s “Through The Fire And Flames“.
In the video above, Greyson nails the song and goes into an extended drum solo with killer technique and dynamics, blazing fast hands, and confidence.
(P.S. Have you seen Greyson’s tips for nailing Buddy Rich licks?)
