Practicing Drums Anywhere!

Jason Sutter  /  UPDATED Mar 5, 2023

Back when Jason Sutter was in college, he struggled to find a way to effectively improve his drumming while away from his kit. Sure, he had a standard practice pad and a pair of sticks at his disposal – but what about those times where he needed to practice in absolute silence? Or when he didn’t have a surface to play on entirely?

Welcome to a wonderful little tool called the wire brush. In today’s lesson, we’re going to focus on how to practice your chops virtually anywhere by utilizing brushes. Even if you don’t plan on learning certain technique’s exclusive to brushes, you can still practice all your usual rudiments and exercises you would normally do with sticks.

Here are three benefits that are exclusive to practicing with brushes:

• They produce very little sound so you won’t disturb anyone.

• They can be played on any surface at your disposal.

• They have little to no rebound which gives your wrists and fingers a killer workout.

But what if you don’t even have a surface to play on? No problem! Watch the video to see how you can still get an effective workout without one!
