The "Getting Started" Module is the perfect introduction to BDS 2.0. You will get to know your three instructors: Jared, Sean, and Dave - while learning essential bass drum fundamentals. Lessons include: choosing a pedal, drum tuning and muffling, bass drum pedal settings, bass drum pedal adjustments, seat height & posture, bass drum setup tips, heel up technique, heel down technique, flat foot technique, and a few other great tips to help get you started.
Bass Drum Independence is something that a lot of drummers struggle with. Separating your hands from your feet and your right foot from your left foot is no easy task. That's where this module hits the mark. It includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced hand patterns that are designed specifically to take your bass drum independence to the next level. Then, once you have completed the module, you can apply your new skills with some of the included drum play-along songs.
The heel-toe technique has always been somewhat of a mystery to many drummers. When taught correctly, it can be learned in a few short minutes. However, without proper instruction, it can easily take days or even weeks of trial-and-error to get it working. This module simplifies the process and teaches you how to play the heel-toe technique with step-by-step examples. You will learn both how to master the technique, and how to apply it within your drumming.
Once you have developed the basic heel-toe technique, you'll want to start incorporating it within practical beats and fills. This fourth module covers beginner, intermediate, and advanced drumming patterns that make specific use of this unique technique. These examples will help you get started with incorporating double strokes in beats, and will leave you well prepared for creating your own unique heel-toe-based beats and fills in the future!
This module covers the slide technique - a popular alternative to the heel-toe method. Dave Atkinson walks you through the basic fundamentals, including: correct footwear and pedal settings, how to develop the technique, how to develop the technique for your left foot, and how to apply the technique with drum beats and drum fills. The slide technique can be used in many different styles of music and is a natural way to play quick double strokes!
In Module 6, you'll get a chance to apply the slide technique within practical beats and fills. It includes a collection of beginner, intermediate, and advanced patterns that progressively increase in difficulty. Each of the drum beats include ten unique variations, and the drum fills include five unique variations. Put your new found slide technique skills to work using these fun exercises, and be prepared to see a dramatic boost in the way you creatively incorporate the bass drum within music!
Here we take a look at double pedal single strokes with Sean Lang. Sean walks you through a couple different lessons in this module, including: the element of groove, developing balance and control, basic 8th and 16th note patterns, bass drum triplets, foot assignment, single stroke beats, single stroke fills, note value exercises, and the herta lick. Playing quick single strokes is a valuable part of playing both single and double bass, so make sure you check out this fun module.
In Module 8 we take a closer look at double pedal single strokes with Dave Atkinson. Dave takes you through a variety of topics, including: double bass warm ups, developing the weaker foot, double bass slide triplets, developing slow speeds, developing speed with single strokes, how to develop endurance, the swivel technique, practicing along to music, developing hand and foot independence, and ending with odd numbers. It's all broken down in step-by-step detail.
Next, you get a chance to look at double pedal single strokes with Jared Falk. He walks you through basic 16th note patterns, 16th note triplets with double strokes, and hertas with double strokes. This really is something that can take your drumming to the next level and give you an edge over other drummers at the same time. By combining the tips and tricks from all three drummers, you'll have an opportunity to create your own original drumming style.
Module 10 features Sean Lang teaching broken double bass beats. These patterns are powerful for creating tight grooves with some added double bass flair. Sean teaches eleven beginner, intermediate, and advanced examples in a progressive way. You can start by learning these example patterns. Then, when you feel comfortable with the concepts, you can start creating your own original patterns to spice things up and boost your creativity on the drum set.
Module 11 covers some really fun double bass exercises that you can implement into your drumming immediately. Dave Atkinson walks you through beginner double bass beats and fills, intermediate double bass beats and fills, as well as advanced double bass beats and fills. If you have been working through the modules, then this is a great place to put some of those new techniques to work, and really start having some fun applying everything you have learned.
Module 12 features Sean Lang teaching metal and blast beats. Even if you're not into metal drumming, these lessons will still teach you some very important speed and coordination concepts that every drummer should learn. Sean Lang walks you through: skank blasts, hammer blasts, bomb blasts, gravity blasts, traditional blasts, one foot vs. two feet, a hybrid hammer blast, developing speed with one foot, and creating groove within blasts.
Playing rudiments with the feet is a massively under-rated concept of bass drumming. A lot of drummers assume that rudiments are only for the hands, but this module opens up new possibilities by utilizing the rudiments with your feet. Jared Falk takes you through playing 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11 stroke rolls - as well as playing swiss army triplets all with your feet. With this module you can create thousands of new drum beats and fills, all by using the rudiments with your feet.
This module is one of the coolest modules within the Bass Drum Secrets 2.0 pack. Here, Jared, Dave and Sean all give their take on unique hand to feet combinations. By the end of this module you will be able to create your own hand to feet combinations for use within beats, fills, and creative drum solos! This module will open new doors for your drumming and really start to expand your creativity when you sit down at the drums.
Okay, you made it! We are at the first play-along module of the Bass Drum Secrets 2.0. Here you get to put all of your new found bass drum techniques, beats, fills, concepts, ideas, and creativity to use. This module features Dave Atkinson's band 'Yuca' as well as a ton of cool jam tracks that you can download and take back to your drum kit. Sean Lang and his band 'First Reign' are featured in the second play-along module of Bass Drum Secrets 2.0. Sean plays along to a couple songs from First Reign's album, then plays along to some really cool jam tracks all of which you can download and take back to your kit. The musical styles include: fast rock, half time rock, metal, shuffle rock, punk, and straight rock. As with all the play-alongs, the video footage includes educational view and a dedicated foot-cam view.
In this third play-along module, Jared Falk plays to some cool jam tracks, including: half time rock, fast rock, metal, straight rock, and drum and bass. You can start by watching the educational view to get an overall feel of the track, and then skip to the foot-cam view to see exactly what techniques are being used. Then, take the drum-less audio tracks to your kit to start jamming along with them. You can use his beats and fills, or come up with your own!
Module 18 features all of the slow motion footage from Bass Drum Secrets 2.0 compiled for easy viewing. The module includes slow motion footage for the slide technique, double pedal slide technique, swivel technique, heel-toe technique, double stroke hertas, feathering the bass drum, swiss army triplets, one handed roll, break beat, gravity blast, double pedal single strokes and much more. This footage shows you exactly how each of these techniques are played!

Finding the right pedal can dramatically improve your bass drumming ability. Pedals included are: Gibraltar Intruder Direct Drive, Axis Longboard, Tama Speed Cobra, Tama Iron Cobra, Gibraltar 3311, Pearl Eliminator, Yamaha Flying Dragons, Pearl P900, and Stomp Direct Drive Retrofit.

One of the most unique components of BDS 2.0 is that it includes three specialized instructors. Each of them bring something different to the table. First, Jared Falk is a well rounded gigging drummer that prefers to use the unique heel-toe technique. Next, Dave Atkinson is a powerful studio drummer that favors the slide technique. And finally, Sean Lang is an incredibly technical drummer that is partial to the flat foot technique for blazing fast singles.
Beyond the use of specific techniques, these three instructors bring unique advice, tips and tricks, and practical applications to the BDS 2.0 lessons. This allows you to choose from several options when applying essential concepts within your drumming. Ultimately, it will allow you to refine your own unique drumming style instead of adopting a single point of view.
I purchased many many instructional videos for drumming, and I have to say that this is the first one that I've purchased that I've actually been able to use the techniques within 20-30 minutes of watching the video. Clarity of teaching style, the slow motion clips, everything comes together to make it very easy to apply what you are trying to teach us.
Jared had an incredibly simple way of explaining the technique. His step by step examples with the multiple camera angles really made the learning process much easier! To be able to hear what you should do and see it at the same time really made the connection with me. I was skeptical at first, due to the fact that over the past six years I have developed a fast steady kick, without the technique. Jareds video put my worries at ease. With the first lesson he motivated me and by the end of the video, I had begun the new journey. My feet now have long surpassed what I had previously thought to be fast. Doing it for the first time and with in such a short period was outstanding! It's amazing the new avenues of rhythms and feels you unlock, all from changing your feet. It has allowed me to grow infinitely with my imagination, and has added the confidence I needed to expand on my styles, and musical interests!
WOW, I saw the heal/toe technique on the CD that came with my kit, but it was not taught with enough detail for me to figure it out. I was slamming my heal down and trying to make that a beat. LOL. Because of your detail, slow speed and shoe demo (I loved the different shoes to prove the point) now I got it! This is your best lesson so far because of how well you explained it. You are a great drum teacher! Thank You
Jared's slow and methodical explanations are easier to follow than other training videos where you get a short, fast explanation and then a video of the drummer playing in a "look what I can do" manner. The first time I played quad (single bass) patterns in-time, cleanly, within a fill and beat I was giggling like I just won the lotto!!! I'm 35 years old and haven't played consistenly since high school, with my most recent lay off at 8 years. Not only has my playing come back to it's original form, I believe I am a better technical drummer than I have ever been. Furthermore, my sight reading has improved just from seeing the rhythm written out and then played. Thank you!
Hey Jared really great thanks for that lesson. I just started playing the drums in october 2010. So I'm a really a beginner and I really have a problem playing the bass drum. So this video helped me in a lot of ways. So I'm just trying to get that technique under my control. So great thanks from Germany and for all of the work you're doing. ;)
Brilliant! Just like everyone else I have to say thank you! I have never had a teacher and so learn so much from these lessons! All very informing and never boring to watch/learn! Could I slip a request in? Would it be possible to show a video on double bass technique/speed building/consistency etc? Or at least give a shout out just saying 'you need to practice... No real technique, it just takes time. Again thanks, and keep it up!
I like the slow down feature the best. We all learn differently, but this allows you to watch exactly what is happening and then try to copy it. At normal or fast speeds it is often tough or impossible to see/hear exactly what a drummer is doing. This breaks it down for us slow learners. I have to concentrate and repeat to learn or remember something slowly before it becomes natural. This is a very helpful tool... Thanks.
I don't know if it's even possible to pick one feature that I like the most, but I guess it would have to be the fact that it's online and so much easier to use than fumbling through DVDs. I love the other online resources you guys have and this will just be another to add to the mix. Thank you all for all of the hard work you put into these things to help newbies like me.
Bass Drum Secrets has completely rewritten the book on educational drumming products. Its comprehensive content and unique format make it a must, not only for drummers looking to improve their bass drum skills but for the entire drumming community as a blueprint for the next generation in teaching tools. Simply amazing! An easy 10 out of 10!
I like the camera angles that show exactly what Jared is doing. I also like the way the video is slowed to 25%, 50%, and 75% speed. The audio portions are clean and clear, making it easy to hear. I used to be right foot dominant, but now I'm learning to be right and left foot dominant. I've been able to subdivide my tempos and improve my timing. I've also started to practice with a "click" and that, combined with the Bass Drum Secrets, my overall performance has improved. My contemporaries have noticed an improvement in my performance, but they aren't sure what it is... they only know that something's going on for the better.
I am so impressed with Jared and the rest of the crew at Railroad Media! Finally a group of people who understand that consumers want their money's worth and more and they absolutely deliver! Plus they are not afraid to give plenty of free bonuses to keep us consumers very happy...hats off to you guys and do not change how you do things...keep giving and delivering more than you promise and you will keep all of us happy, as we already are! Thanks guys and well done, nice to see there are some people who seem to care about the purchaser!
Awesome lesson. I got the first Bass Drum Secrets and it transformed my drumming. My first thought when I got this lesson in my in box was "Been there, done that". And I am glad I watched because I learned even more tips and tricks to make my Bass Drum into my third hand. Can't wait for the next lesson and to get a copy of the Bass Drum Secrets 2.0! Thanks Jared.
Not only do I get the opportunity to learn so much great stuff through the mountains of lessons, but my son's also have the opportunity to learn better techniques and playing ability, and challenge their dad with their drumming skills! What a resource to have to pass down to each generation of drummers. Thanks for the endless supply of learning!
The fact that it covers essentially everything you could ever want to know about playing the bass drum. How to even start playing, developing your independence, speed and control, techniques like the heel-toe and slide, beats, and so much more. Also, the live feature. Every week there is a chance to get any questions that you have answered with great detail. It's not really a feature, but also the helpfulness of everyone involved. While it costs money, you can tell they honestly care about getting us drummers whatever we need to help learn and progress.
I really liked that he did the lessons slow as possible so that you could understand what he was saying, and because he took it slow, it was easy to follow along with. Another thing, which is the best thing about the video, is the foot cam and the foot cam with the slow motion. I can't stress enough how much that help me. The fact that the actual foot motion on the bass pedal, when shown with a slow-motion camera, was very easy to learn and understand, and that impressed me a lot! It has improved my drumming drastically. The most obvious improvement is bass pedal speed. The thing that I'm most happy with, is to play a regular bass beat, but be able to throw in a double hit here and there and it sounds so good. Good work! Thank you!
I love the idea of using rudiments on the bass drum. My old teacher started to go through with me before I stopped (due to lack of funds).. I don't feel like I can improve much more without at least some sort of instructional video and I believe these show everything in which I need to see to learn them. 5 stroke roll? Brilliant! I can't imagine how beneficial this will be for my bass drum speed. Thanks!
