About the lesson:
In this lesson, Tosin Aribisala explores the world of modern African grooves through styles such as afrobeat, makossa, and soukous. To make it easier on you, Tosin will break down each groove into its many separate components so you can master them quicker once you get to putting everything together. He’ll also play a few tracks showcasing these ideas so you can hear them in a musical context!

About Tosin:
Tosin Aribisala is a composer, vocalist, and percussionist who explores a wide variety of genres such as jazz, funk, rock, reggae, and Afro-Cuban music. Tosin has performed, recorded, and toured around the world with various groups and artists including Taj Mahal, Baba Maal, Fatoumata Diawara, Spyro Gyra, Julie Dexter, Femi Kuti, and many others. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Tosin was nominated for the Wamma Awards for “best world music instrumentalist” by the Washington Area Music Association. In 2014, he also received the Individual Artist Award for World Music Compositions from the Maryland State Arts Council. Tosin appeared at the Percussive Arts Society’s International Convention (PASIC) as a clinician and performer in 2016.

Tosin professes that “my music is a mixture of African rhythmic idioms and elements of jazz and blues, with lyrics of hope, love, and human realities.”
