How To End A Song On Drums

There are many ways to end a song on the drums, but today we’re going to take a look at the “trash can ending” in particular. There’s really no right or wrong way to perform this, but here are a few tips to help you out:

Trash can ending structure:

» Crash hit (optional: roll on the crashes)
» Play your chosen pattern around the kit
» Signal to your band that you’re about to end the song
» Final crash hit

1) Use a pattern you already know

Pick a sticking you’re familiar with! There are no rules that are set in stone with trash can endings. You can choose something as simple as a single or double stroke roll, or add in the kick drum to add a little more punch. Just about anything goes!

2) Play it slow OR fast

Don’t feel pressured to rip around your kit as fast as possible. Trash can endings can feel loose and relaxed, or tight and quick. You can even go back and forth depending on the vibe you’re going for.

3) Signal the end of the song to your band mates

There are multiple ways to do this, so watch the video above to see a few examples in action. Whether it’s a large arm motion or slapping the snare, you need to make sure everyone is locked in for the final crash hit.
