You have the vocabulary from doing countless different drum exercises, but how do you express yourself more freely?

JP Bouvet is here with his band Childish Japes to share one concept they’ve used to escape the standard writing process and how it allows them to explore a plethora of unique ideas. It’s all based around establishing and changing roles in the band.

In a normal jam setting, each instrument is has their own roles:

The drums are responsible for keeping time and acting as a solid anchor for the band.

The guitar usually revolves around the melody.

The bass plays off the drums while also providing a low-end for the melody to give it a fuller sound.

Childish Japes will show a standard jam, then switch their roles:

The drums will handle the lower frequencies and set a rhythmic foundation that a bass player would normally handle.

The guitar will handle the rhythm.

The bass will play the melody.

As you can see, just by redefining those roles you’re forced to play outside of your comfort zone. Just because you’re being more creative doesn’t guarantee the results will be objectively better, however through trial and error, I’m sure you’ll be able to think up some pretty cool ideas!

More videos you’ll love:

►How To Play With A Bass Player
►4 Essential Drum Grooves

Creativity is something all musicians struggle with.
