Dennis has made a long career out of drumming and has seen it evolve throughout the years, so we wanted to know if he had any advice for drummers who are just starting out.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis finds most drummers these days are focused more on the technical and flashy aspects of drumming rather than complementing the music and making it groove.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest culprit? Not <b>listening<\/b>. This might seem like a simple answer, but it bears more weight than you might initially think.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You need to learn how to crawl before you learn how to run.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Dennis Chambers<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So how do we improve our listening skills?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) Load up some of your favorite music.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0Go to any part in the song\u00a0that includes drumming.<\/p>\n<p>3) Focus in on one of their limbs and try to replicate what they&#8217;re playing. For example, try and play just the ride pattern or only bass drum part. As you get comfortable, start introducing another limb.<\/p>\n<p>This exercise turns what may seem like a complex drum part into something more digestible.
