But let us explain&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dorothea Taylor &#8211; godmother of drumming and queen of drumline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/rudiments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rudiments<\/a> &#8211; has seen a lot of drummers during her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/dorothea-taylor-interview-drumeo-gab-podcast-148\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost 60 years of playing<\/a>. So we asked her to break down some key scenes from the movie <em>Drumline<\/em> (2002). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it came out. it reminded the general public that hey &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/news\/meet-drumlines-loose-39923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">drummers are pretty awesome<\/a>. School drumlines have since gotten better and better, and more people have felt inspired to pick up the sticks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dorothea notices something while she&#8217;s watching Nick Cannon&#8217;s scenes in <em>Drumline<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Did he really play that? Or was the camera just showing hands?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dorothea&#8217;s gut was right: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/drumming-in-tv-movies-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cannon was <em>not <\/em>the one with all the drumline chops in the movie<\/a>. In the first film, the blazing hands belonged to a guy named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/entertainment\/article\/Drumline-new-theme-for-UniverSoul-Circus-2580995.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jason Price<\/a> (a Florida A&amp;M drummer who later played with the Atlanta Hawks drumline, the Atlanta Falcons drumline and more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blasphemy? Not so much &#8211; it&#8217;s tough to find an amazing drummer who&#8217;s also an amazing actor. It&#8217;s common for actors to have a skilled stunt double or body double. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/news\/meet-drumlines-loose-39923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cannon <em>did<\/em> train with Price<\/a> for a month to learn how to play the snare drum and how to master some of the stick tricks. Unfortunately, it just wasn&#8217;t enough time to pick up the level of chops he would&#8217;ve needed to convincingly do it all himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Cannon now has a daytime talk show, and he invited Dorothea to join him for a drum battle! You can watch that clip in the reaction video at the top of this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in that video, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drumatically_smoov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marcus Joyner<\/a> (a &#8216;hand double&#8217; for two main characters in the second <em>Drumline<\/em> movie) calls in to chat with Dorothea while she goes through scenes from the film. She also drops facts about actual drumlines and if she thinks the movie reflects reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/the-drum-set-can-wait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dorothea was a snare drummer in her school drum and bugle corps<\/a>, and she&#8217;s been mentoring and teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/3-drumline-inspired-warmups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drumline drummers<\/a> (and drum set drummers) ever since.
