Get a bunch of drummers in a room and make them choose the top 20 drummers in the history of rock ‘n roll!

We polled the Drumeo staff and the community of thousands of Drumeo members to see who people consider some of the most important, interesting, or influential figures in rock drumming. This list includes classic heroes and modern legends who have made a lasting impact on the drumming community by inspiring others either through popular bands or with their technical abilities. Many are recognizable to drummers and non-drummers alike.

One thing’s for sure: in the world of rock music, there’s room for every type of drummer, whether you’re a simple, backbeat-driven machine or a complex, technical master.

(If you like these ‘top drummer’ lists, check out The Top 100 Drummers Of All Time)

We’d like to preface this list with a few disclaimers:

No matter how much effort goes into choosing these drummers, it’s always going to be somewhat subjective. You might be really excited about who we include, or you might strongly disagree. There’s no right or wrong answer – every pro rock drummer has their gig for good reason, and your own list might be completely different! We’re just here to have fun and highlight some of rock’s most memorable beat-keepers.

There’s a notable lack of diversity on this list – the history of mainstream rock bands up to this point has featured mostly white dudes. However, things are changing, and as time goes on we expect this list likely will too.

Without further ado, here’s our top 20 in alphabetical order.

The Top 20 Rock Drummers

John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

Bill Bruford (YES)

Phil Collins (Genesis)

Peter Criss (KISS)

Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures)

Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters)

Levon Helm (The Band)

Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)

Nick Mason (Pink Floyd)

Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix)

Keith Moon (The Who)

Ian Paice (Deep Purple)

Neil Peart (Rush)

Jeff Porcaro (Toto)

Phil Rudd (AC/DC)

Michael Shrieve (Santana)

Ringo Starr (The Beatles)

Roger Taylor (Queen)

Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)

Meg White (The White Stripes)

John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

Embed from Getty Images

Bonzo had it all: power, groove, and boundless creativity.
