He&#8217;s able to identify sections and get the gist of the track before adding detailed notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Gregg listens to the song and roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/how-to-chart-a-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcribes a form chart of the structure<\/a> and identifies key accents and sections (you can write it on paper instead of your floor tom). He listens again and maps out the number and length of the bars. Then Gregg was given the actual chart as a reference, where he added phrase markings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a session drummer, it&#8217;s important to be able to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/how-to-read-drum-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> read and transcribe<\/a> music so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/casey-cooper-drum-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn songs quickly<\/a> and accurately. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/gregg-bissonette-take-their-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that&#8217;s how Gregg landed a gig with David Lee Roth<\/a>. He has the skills to feel phrase length and repetitions, identify figures and solos, articulate longs and shorts, and identify roadmap signs (like a dal segno or coda).
